Day 1: Gray M

My name is Gray McElroy and this is my first entry to this J-term blog. For J-term I am participating in Shadow Boxes & Diorama. We experimented with paper, cardboard, cork, and LED lights in this J-term. Before this J-term, I took classes that revolved around the same principles demonstrated in this course, I really enjoyed those classes so picking this as my J-term was a no-brainer.

Today my focus was on getting my design down for both projects, for both of my projects I wanted to make something that told a story or was sentimental to me or my family. This thought process led me to make my shadow box a snapshot of my favorite book, Fahrenheit 451, and my diorama a statue of a monument that was sentimental to my late grandfather. Overall I enjoyed the brainstorming process as it was a crucial way to get my ideas out

One roadblock I encountered was making sure the image could tell a story and wasn't just there by itself. I was really struggling with this concept of showing the audience a scene until Mr.Grisbee helped me clarify my ideas. To overcome this bump in the road I drew multiple different sketches using different houses, bushes, and fire, I did this so I could see what ideas worked together and which didn't. It ended up adding more detail to my final rough sketch while simultaneously giving me a deeper understanding of perspective and how it is properly used.

After the first day, I can confidently say that I am going to enjoy this J-term I have a great group who I can mess around with but also focus with. I really enjoyed drawing my sketch (even though I am not very artistic) it was great preparation and it set me up in perfect shape for the rest of the week. I am very excited for tomorrow and I hope I can stay productive while also enjoying this opportunity and staying in the moment. I hope by tomorrow I can get some of my sketches on Adobe Illustrator and maybe even print some on the laser cutter!
